Web hosting
You need to purchase a domain name and web hosting. Your hosting needs to be operational by Wednesday of week 3 so please do it as soon as possible as there is often a 48hr delay in processing. It is very important that you register a domain with your hosting package.
DO NOT try and register a .com.au domain (you need to be a registered business).

Some hosts include:
http://www.lithiumhosting.com/ (Recommended for fast set-up)
http://www.crazydomains.com.au/
http://www.justhost.com/
There are many more hosts available.

GROUP A: DESIGN
Research
The main project for the unit is the redesign of an existing site. Your research will be informed by the site that you are redesigning. You can choose between:
– Faculty of Arts & Design (http://www.canberra.edu.au/faculties/arts-design/)
– The Corner Hotel (http://cornerhotel.com)
– The Northcote Social Club (http://northcotesocialclub.com)
Once you have chosen which site you will redesign, start looking at web design galleries like:
o http://bestwebgallery.com/category/css/
o http://cssremix.com/
o http://siteinspire.com/
o http://www.csselite.com/
o http://www.smashingmagazine.com/tag/showcases/
If you see something you like, be sure to make a note of it or take a screenshot for your blog. Look for specific design characteristics that work well. Consider why they are successful and how you might be able to adapt them for your design. Also, be sure to check out http://patterntap.com/
Screen shots
Mac:
To take a selection on screen use: command + shift + 4
For whole window: command + shift + 4 + space

PC:
Press print screen (prnt scrn) and paste into an image editor like photoshop
NOTE: You are studying sites looking for design patterns – you cannot copy whole site designs or take existing artwork and use for use in your design. If you want a background image or some other graphic, you must create it.
Site Structure Illustration
Create an illustration showing the structure of your website. The site structure illustration is a simple flow chart outlining the pages on your site and how they are organised. Have a look at this example:
http://dev.opera.com/articles/view/intelligent-site-structure-for-better-se/
It does not matter what software you use to create your illustration (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign, Word, etc.) If you want to use Illustrator, there is a demo video and Illustrator example provided below.
For more info on site structure and navigation see chapter 6 from “Don’t Make Me Think” in e-Reserve.
Web Design
Use the 960 grid as a starting template for your web design. The grid can be downloaded from here: http://960.gs
Your design will be informed by the research you have completed. See the video demos for more details on how to set up your Photoshop design, and how to use the 960 grid template.
You can use a selection of content (text + images) from your source site but your design must be entirely your own.
