The Household Products Industry Essay

PAPER Sources: Your main source of information should be the computerized databases available on the library home page. (See page 5 or the link on Blackboard). In addition, government websites such as www.bea.gov, www.federalreserve.gov, www.doj.gov often provide useful information. Each online database contains a variety of sources. If you focus on only one source or type of source (annual reports, SEC filings, etc.) it will have a negative effect your grade. If you use a book, you must submit a copy of the pages you have cited, the title of the book, and the author(s) when you hand in your paper. If you are using a web site and it makes sense to cite it only once (www.sec.gov, for example), do so. You may not use Wikipedia, answers.com, etc. as sources. You are required to get the financial statements for your companies from their 10-Ks. You can obtain the 10-Ks from the SEC (www.sec.gov), corporate websites, or Mergent. See page 6 for information relating to the SEC website. A 10-K generally has two years of the balance sheet and three years of the income statement and cash flow statement. Since you need five years of information, you need to do the following. If a company’s 2011 10-K is available: 2011 10-K: Use the 2011 and 2010 numbers from the balance sheet, and the 2011, 2010 and 2009 numbers from income and cash flow statements. 2010 10-K: Use the 2009 numbers from the balance sheet, and the 2008 numbers from income and cash flow statements. 2009 10-K: Use the 2008 numbers from the balance sheet, and the 2007 numbers from income and cash flow statements. 2008 10-K: Use the 2007 numbers from the balance sheet. If a company’s 2011 10-K is not available: 2010 10-K: Use the 2010 and 2009 numbers from the balance sheet, and the 2010, 2009 and 2008 numbers from income and cash flow statements. 2009 10-K: Use the 2008 numbers from the balance sheet, and the 2007 numbers from income and cash flow statements. 2008 10-K: Use the 2007 numbers from the balance sheet, and the 2006 numbers from income and cash flow statements. 2007 10-K: Use the 2006 numbers from the balance sheet. Citations: You are required to have a “Works Cited” list at the end of your paper containing at least fifteen citations in MLA style. For information on MLA style, see page 5. The citations in the body of your paper must also follow MLA style. You may not use footnotes. Content: Your paper must contain but is not limited to the following: Introduction: what the paper about, why this subject is important, and how the rest of the paper is arranged. Industry: a description of your industry, including an industry SWOT you have developed based on your research. Your industry SWOT may not be copied from another document; it is based on the research you have done. Companies: information about the companies you have chosen and your reason(s) for choosing them; financial analyses including ratio analyses using the ratios we use in class, stock valuation using as many of the methods we use in class as are appropriate; the capital structure ratios we use in class, and the impacts of that capital structure; international presence and impacts; and recent news. Your ratio analyses must contain five years of ratios calculated in Excel. I will give you more information on this in class. Do not submit your firms’ financial statements with your paper. Conclusion: your opinion on the future of your industry, in which firms you would invest, if any, and why or why not. Format: Your final paper must be double-spaced in Times New Roman 12 with one-inch margins and page numbers. Do not put it in a folder or anything else. Do not use a cover page. On the first page of your paper, type your name and the title of the paper, skip a line and begin writing. The maximum length of your paper is sixteen pages, including EVERYTHING.
