The aim of this assessment item is to assess your abilities in:
o Applying sociological concepts and theories to contemporary health issues.
o Explaining the influence of social structure and human agency on the organisation of health care and health outcomes.
o Presenting a logical and coherent written argument supported by appropriate sociological evidence.
There are five key marking criteria for this assessment item:
o Argument “ Does the essay focus clearly on the selected topic? Have you engaged with appropriate sociological concepts and theories, and have you applied these to the topic? Are the points made sequentially so that they build an argument? Are important terms defined and discussed? Is there evidence to support each point? Have you selected material from sources and interpreted it or simply presented a number of quotations?
o Structure “ Does your introduction provide adequate context to the topic as well as indicate clearly the direction to be taken in the paper? Is the essay organised into paragraphs? Does the conclusion draw together the main points and relate these back to the topic?
o Source material “ Have you shown that you have understood what you have read? Have you integrated quotations and paraphrased material into the paper in a way that develops the argument? Have you read several references to gain an understanding of different viewpoints?
o Style and presentation Is the writing clear and to the point? Is spelling, grammar and punctuation correct? Have you included wide enough margins for comments to be inserted by markers? Have you numbered all the pages?
o Referencing “ Are all sources properly acknowledged and referenced? Is APA referencing style used?
Please submit your paper in 12 point font and double-spaced with wide margins to allow space for feedback and comments. If you are unsure about referencing or academic writing, it is your responsibility to locate guidelines and learn the required protocols. Student Support and the library offer assistance with these skills. If you are still confused your subject coordinator or tutor will be happy to provide further clarification.

SOC108 “ Guidelines: Assignment 2
Please refer to pp.9-10 of the SOC108 subject outline for specific instructions on the second assignment.
Use of academic sources/references “ Use the essential and recommended readings (i.e., textbook chapters, readings on the CD-ROM) as the basis of your argument. Markers will check carefully that you have cited and understood these readings in your assignment. For this assignment it is also important to make use of relevant library resources (e.g., books, journals). Please remember to use APA referencing style.
Number of references “ For an essay of 2,000 words, an average of about 10-12 references is expected, although keep in mind that it is how well you use your references rather than simply the quantity of references that is important.
Marking criteria “ this is the specific criteria that will be used by markers to assess your level of understanding of, and critical engagement with, the topic. Grades will be assigned based on how well your assignment addresses these criteria. A detailed explanation of the grading criteria is provided in the Resources section of the SOC108 Interact site.
Structure “ Your essay should be structured as follows:
o Title page “ on this page make sure that the topic is clearly identified and that you have included the word count of your essay.
o Introduction “ the introduction should provide a brief context to the topic and indicate clearly how you intend to go about responding to the essay question (e.g., such as the key issues to be raised, the theories which will be drawn upon to make sense of the topic, etc).
o Main body “ this is where you respond to the assignment topic and develop your argument.
o Conclusion “ the conclusion should not be a statement of your opinion: it should be a summation or drawing together of the argument you have developed in the assignment.
o Reference list
Argument “ Make sure that your essay flows in a logical manner from one point to the next, is free of spelling and grammatical errors, and is properly referenced. In the first assignment I marked a number of essays that were poorly drafted with numerous spelling and grammatical errors. These are avoidable and easily fixed with proper proof-reading.
