1. 1.Many MCC students are not from the Waco area (MCC is the school that I’m taking class online). Some have suggested that MCC needs to build a dormitory so these students would have an opportunity to get campus housing. Should MCC build a dormitory?¨ ¨2. 2.A Texas law that took effect in January 2008 limits the number of courses undergraduate students are permitted to drop in college. The new law does not allow new students or transfer students at public colleges and universities to drop more than six classes during their entire undergraduate studies. The purpose of this law is to motivate students to complete their courses. Consequently, students can no longer change their majors so frequently as in the past. Further, the law encourages students to graduate more quickly. Also, the law reduces the amount of debt for student loans. Should Texas Law allow new students or transfer students at public colleges and universities to drop more than six classes during their entire undergraduate studies? ¨
3. 3. The current attendance policy at MCC requires instructors to drop students ¨who have reached a 25% absentee rate. Some would like administrators to abolish this policy. Should MCC abolish its attendance policy?¨ ¨ ¨4. 4.Recently, Waco residents debated whether MCC should become a four-year college. Should MCC become a four-year institution? ¨ ¨ ¨ ¨ Your paper should be at least eight paragraphs (Each paragraph should has at least 150 words). In the introduction, provide any background information concerning the topic. You may use some of the information above. You may also include examples from friends or classmates to illustrate the issue. Your THESIS statement should be the last sentence of your introduction. It states your position. YOU MUST CHOOSE A SIDE.¨ Your next three paragraphs will present opposing arguments and refutations. For example, in the paragraph following the introduction, present an opposing argument. AN OPPOSING ARGUMENT IS AN ARGUMENT PRESENTED BY THOSE WHO DISAGREE WITH YOUR POSITION. After you present the opposing argument, you should try to refute it. A REFUTATION EXPLAINS WHY YOU DISAGREE WITH THE OPPOSING ARGUMENT. This can be done in the same paragraph with the opposing argument encompassing the first half of the paragraph and the refutation making up the last half of the paragraph. You need to present three opposing arguments and refute each, thus the three paragraphs. If you cannot refute an argument, you may concede the point. ¨ In the next three paragraphs, present three additional supporting arguments. In other words, discuss three different reasons to support your position. You may not use any of the points discussed in your refutations. Remember each supporting argument must be discussed in a separate paragraph. ¨ Your final paragraph is your conclusion. Restate your thesis. Review some of your main points. You may also discuss how you believe this issue will be resolved or if you believe this issue will be resolved.¨ ¨You may not use outside sources except for information you get from your college catalog, your handbook, or from discussions with teachers, other personnel, or friends.
