About this exercise: The attached text-file contains an excerpt from an interview with Indian novelist and activist Arundhati Roy, on the damming of the Narmada River in India. Roy has, for many years, been at the forefront of popular opposition to globalization, especially concerned about its impact on poor and rural populations in India and other developing nations. Her opposition to the building of dams like those in the Narmada Valley is part of this campaign. Read the excerpt carefully.

Step 1:
Write around one and a half A4 pages on Roy s responses, especially her views as they are expressed in the second half of the interview. Look as dispassionately as you can at her handling of the issues, and the presentation of her arguments. You may feel, as I do, that her case is morally compelling. As a critical and cultural theorist, however, you need to go beyond simply responding emotionally, and show you can analyse the way her position is articulated discursively. What are the assumptions and categories that underlie her arguments and the discourses on which they draw? How visible are these assumptions, and how successfully are they argued for? What kinds of evidence does she adduce in support of her views, and how does she deploy this evidence? To what extent do her discursive strategies in this interview suggest she feels constrained to play the game of glocal politics by the rules of her opponents?
