You may choose one of the two following options:
1) Increasingly, events have been at the centre of development policies of cities and regions. While supporters of public subsidy for cultural and sport events have stressed their social, physical and economic benefits, critics have described them as cosmetic exercises (García, 2004) which divert resources and attention from real social problems. Discuss this statement, developing an argument to support your view as to whether cultural and sport events should (or should not) be subsidized with public funds.
2) ‘Business travel is affected directly and indirectly by the state of the economy in which those who buy it and sell it operate. At the same time, business travel has a considerable impact upon the economy of the destinations to which its consumers make their trips’ (Davidson and Cope, 2003: 11). Discuss this statement, referring in particular to the current economic crisis and its impacts on business tourism.
Academic literature (notably books and journal articles) should represent a key source of information for your report. In addition, policy documents, tourism development strategies, government statistics, commercial research reports (e.g. Mintel) and other reliable sources of secondary data will complement your background research. You are encouraged to support your argument with the use of relevant examples.

Case Study: ‘Expedia: The Changing Business Model’
(Reading material on this case study will be provided in class as hard copies)
Task: you will answer any three of the following questions:
1) The last decade has seen an exponential growth of on-line travel businesses, which has dramatically changed the distribution structure of the tourism industry. Referring to the case of Expedia in particular, discuss whether this shift represents an opportunity or a threat for high street travel agents.
2) Briefly explain the difference between the ‘commission business model’ and the ‘merchant business model’ for on-line travel agencies. Which of the two business models is prevalent in the UK on-line travel market today?
3) How have on-line travel agencies such as Expedia changed client expectations? How can high street travel agencies remain competitive?
4) Between 2002 and 2003 eight of the ten US largest airlines decided to stop paying commissions to travel agents, while many hotel owners were complaining about Expedia’s strong control on prices. Some observers predicted the failure of the ‘merchant business model’ and the consequent decline of Expedia’s leading position in the tourism industry. Almost ten years later, how has the on-line travel industry evolved in the UK?
Remember, there is no right or wrong answer for either the report or the case study questions. You can approach the topic in various ways. However, in all cases you need to justify your argument and demonstrate a critical understanding of the chosen topic. Referencing (Harvard style) must be frequent and accurate throughout.
You are encouraged to discuss the assignments with your fellow students, but the final script submitted must be entirely your own work. Plagiarism is totally unacceptable here at Anglia Ruskin University and will be severely punished.
