You will write and present a 4-5 minute presentation on a topic of your choice. It is best to choose a topic that you either a) know a lot about, or b) want to know a lot about. Your goal is to research your topic and inform your audience about what you’ve learned — not to persuade them. So that you do not confuse these two different speaking purposes (informing vs. persuading), it is probably wise to avoid controversial topics for this presentation. Also keep in mind the ethical responsibility you have to yourself and to your audience. You are required to submit a formal outline, typed, and in complete sentences, and including speech title/topic, specific purpose, thesis statement, attention material, and preview. LABEL and FULLY DEVELOP introduction, body, conclusion, and transitions between all three outline parts. A typed Works Cited (bibliography) page is also required with your outline. Source citations must meet APA style (see References Cited at http://library.uww.edu/GUIDES/APACITE.htm and/or http://owl.english.purdue.edu/handouts/research/r_apa.html). Your Works Cited page must be on a separate sheet of paper, not simply added to the bottom of your outline. Works Cited requirements: You must have a minimum of three (3) hard sources for research. Hard sources are those that are available in print, even if not exclusively a print source. For example, if you use the periodical Wall Street Journal and obtain the information online, you are allowed to count it as a hard source because the Journal is published in both print and electronic formats. You must document electronic sources in accordance with APA style. Note that APA style requires information in addition to a website URL; www.wallstreetjournal.com/educationalresearch/funding.htm would be an incomplete/insufficient cite. Also note that your three hard sources may not include a dictionary or encyclopedia, which can only be used to define or explain a topic or term that might be unfamiliar or ambiguous to your audience.
