Academic essay
Globalization has lead to technological innovations and wealth accumulation, which have enabled people in rich countries to enjoy higher standard of living than people in developing countries. However, the consumption patterns of people in rich countries have exerted a great challenge to the environment. Some people think that technology can ultimately solve this problem and we shouldn t be concerned about our life style/consumption patterns; other people believe that technology will not solve this problem unless we change the life style/consumption patterns.
Writing task:
What is your opinion? Do you think people in Dubai should or should not change their life style/consumption patterns? If you think we need to change, what should we (consumers, corporations, organizations, and/or government) do to create the change? If you think we can remain the way we live, give reasons to support your opinion.
Use any of the following types of resources:
United Nations, NGO, or United Arab Emirates government publications
articles from a journal, magazine, or newspapers like Gulf News & The National;
Popular websites like Wikipedia and How Stuff Works are NOT allowed as one of the references.
However, you CAN use links on a Wikipedia page to access some relevant sources.
Basic organization of your essay:
1. If you think people in the Dubai should change their life style/consumption patterns, follow the outline below to organize a problem-solution academic essay:
Introduction(including the following elements)
background information (context for discussion)
Summarize the context of the problem: globalization helps rich countries accumulate wealth and leads to excessive consumption.
Summarize the history of globalization in the UAE. Consider how the changes since the discovery of oil have led to the rapid globalization of the country, and how the wealth accumulation and current consumption pattern has caused negative consequences on the sustainability of the ecology (the UAE s ecological footprint).
thesis statement”Write a statement that lays out the solutions

Body paragraphs: (number of paragraphs vary) Each paragraph should have the following:
a clear topic sentence that is clearly connected to the thesis statement
sufficient supporting statements –You need to write about each solution separately—refer to the topic development practice to include example, facts, explanations, experiences, observations, and you must cite in proper APA in-text citation format relevant information from other sources. You not only present the solution, but also show how each solution can help reduce the UAE s ecological footprint.

Conclusion: (Clinch the essay, emphasizing the thesis statement once again)
Draw it all together by discussing what all this means for the future of the UAE. What would you like to see happen regarding the UAE s ecology?

2. If you think people in the Dubai can remain their consumption patterns/life style, follow the outline below to organize an argumentative academic essay:
Introduction(including the following elements)
background information (context for discussion)
Summarize the context of the problem: globalization helps rich countries accumulate wealth and leads to excessive consumption.
Summarize the history of globalization in the UAE. Consider how the changes since the discovery of oil have led to the rapid globalization of the country, and how the wealth accumulation and current consumption pattern has caused negative consequences on the sustainability of the ecology (the UAE s ecological footprint).
thesis statement”Write a statement that shows the reason (technology) why we can maintain our current consumption pattern.

Body paragraphs: (number of paragraphs vary) Each paragraph should have the following:
a clear topic sentence that is clearly connected to the thesis statement
sufficient supporting statements –You need to write about each reason separately (the following may be the two reasons: technology can provide sufficient resources, such as food, renewable, affordable energy, and etc; technology can also help reduce pollution and create cleaner environment)—refer to the topic development practice to include example, facts, explanations, experiences, observations, and you must cite in proper APA in-text citation format relevant information from other sources. You not only present the reason, but also show evidence to support the reason.

Conclusion: (Clinch the essay, emphasizing the thesis statement once again)
Draw it all together by discussing what all this means for the future of the UAE. What would you like to see happen regarding the UAE s ecology?
