The aim of this assignment is for you to show you know how to exploit a text in order to develop students’ receptive skills (listening/reading), as well as relevant productive skills (speaking/writing), using a text or transcript from a coursebook or from an authentic source.
If using coursebook material, submit the original material with your assignment so you can show what you have changed/adapted.
Using this text or listening, plan a lesson to develop specific reading or listening skills that you think this material lends itself to and that are relevant to the level and needs of the students you are teaching. Also, identify the productive language skills that could also be practised and developed.
Do not write out a lesson plan using the usual lesson planning template. Your assignment should be written in prose.
Your assignment must include the following information:
? the level of students you would use this text with;
? your overall reasons for selecting the text, i.e., your rationale;
? a description of any pre-listening/reading activities/tasks you would plan for, giving your aims for each stage and including any hand-out tasks you would use; handouts can be attached as appendices and should not be included in your word count;
? the while-listening/reading activities/tasks you would set, giving your reasons and indicating what particular reading/listening skills they are designed to develop, including any hand-outs you design;
? a description of the post-listening/reading activities you would use as follow-up, including hand-outs; indicate what productive (speaking/writing) language skills you would practise in relation to the text at any of the above stages, stating what these language skills are that you are trying to develop.
? a list of the references consulted, whether books or online articles and resources
A successful assignment will
? show a correct use of terminology relating to language skills (and sub-skills);
? indicate a clear relation between the tasks designed and particular language skills to be practised;
? have selected an appropriate text to the level and needs of their students;
? use written language that is clear, accurate and appropriate to the overall assignment.
? include evidence of referenced background reading
Word count: 750 – 1000 (not including the text itself or appendices including student handouts)
