Law enforcement, criminal courts, and correctional agencies are the core components of the American criminal justice system. Advances in technology are changing the types of crimes committed and the processes by which law enforcement officers investigate them. The criminal justice system is experiencing relationship changes between technology and criminal activity, and technological advances in criminalistics. Computers are currently being used to commit crimes that were traditionally committed offline. Examples are the sell of prescription drugs over the internet, solicitation for sex, and cyber stalking or communication of threats through social networks or email. Federal laws are in place to protect users from unlawful conduct on the internet, and do not distinguish between crimes committed over the internet and those committed through traditional means of communication.
