Biogeochemical cycles are responsible for the transfer of matter and energy

Biogeochemical cycles are responsible for the transfer of matter and energy. Energy moves in different forms but is never lost or destroyed. In the nitrogen cycle, electrical energy becomes chemical energy through lightning (nitrogen) fixation, turning nitrogen gas into nitric oxide. Energy changes forms again during assimilation when chemical energy in nitrates and ammonium ions convert to mechanical energy plants use to change position and grow. In the carbon cycle, chemical energy becomes mechanical and electrical energy through the burning of fossil fuels.
Assignment: Make an original diagram of the water, carbon, or nitrogen cycle. Create an original diagram. Make sure the product is your own work.
Demonstrate what has been learned about energy transfer. Make sure the following items are included in the diagram:
a. Add arrows showing the flow of energy from one part of the cycle to the other.
b. Depending on the cycle you choose, label the types and forms of carbon, water, or nitrogen at each step of the cycle.
c. Label the location or chemical reaction taking place at each step of the cycle.
Create the diagram in any of the following ways:
Use any drawing or presentation program. Go to Web 2.0 tools for options.
Use pictures of different stages of the chosen cycle and submit a presentation showing each stage with a corresponding picture.
*any sources used from the internet must be appropriately cited
Then answer the questions below.
1. Briefly describe what is happening during each labeled step of your diagram.
2. What forms of energy are being transferred in your cycle? For example, electrical energy converts to chemical energy during lightning fixation.
Grading Requirements:
The diagram includes labeling of all of the necessary types and forms of water, carbon, or nitrogen cycle.
Breadth Includes labeling of all of the expected types and forms. The diagram includes labeling of the reactions or locations in cycle. Depth Includes labeling of all the reactions or locations in cycle. The diagram includes arrows demonstrating an understanding of energy and matter transfer in biogeochemical cycles.
Understanding Shows all energy and matter transfers within the selected cycle.
The presentation is concise and organized.
Clarity The finished product is extremely clear and organized.
