Relevance to Project
The key focus of CUC106 is the completion of a team design project and this first assignment gives you a chance to do some preliminary research into a potential project that your team might pursue.
Through this research you will be enabled to contribute well informed ideas about the logistics of the various project options. This will assist you and your team to decide which project will be a viable one.
This last step, in presenting your research findings, provides you with a chance to practice essential academic skills in critical reading, summarising and writing.
To complete this assignment, you need to:
Come up with a specific, potential project idea.
2.Using the library research tools, find three, relevant, credible sources of information that tell you more about the problem, technology and the context. This should help you decide on the viability of the project.
3.You will need to summarise and comment on each of the sources of information you have chosen and present these as an annotated bibliography.

Present your chosen sources as a critical annotated bibliography as follows:
i. the bibliographical details of the source as a heading for each annotation
ii. A summary of the central themes and key points within the source.
iii. A comment on how the information relates to and assists your understanding of to your specific project and provide a brief explanation of why the source is credible.

Your assignment needs to be presented using the following format:
Single document, MS word or PDF format, with Assessment Cover Sheet (downloadable from Learnline) at the front. Do NOT include your cover sheet as a separate file.

Presenting research into a potential project
Improving water quality at household level through the supply of enhanced SODIS (solar water disinfection) stations.

This article is the result of an investigative study undertaken to determine the effectiveness of solar water disinfection if alternate backing surfaces are applied to standard water vessels. Both reflective (foil-backed) and absorptive (black-backed) rear surfaces were trialed, in various levels of sunlight. The study concludes that a reflective rear surface significantly enhances solar water disinfection, particularly in suboptimal levels of sunlight (e.g. monsoonal conditions), compared to absorptive-backed and non-backed vessels.
These findings are acutely relevant to my project idea, providing a clear guide to the selection of component materials. Further research of similar studies and results, should supply sufficient evidence that a reflective rear surface is the most viable option to pursue in my design.

The practice of SODIS, as a preventative health behaviour, is encouraged when access to clean drinking water is unreliable. Though the process is simple, it is observed that the behaviour is discontinued over time, or as education programs cease. This article provides an overview of why this occurs, and uses cluster analysis in characterising relapse behaviour compared to continuing behaviour, during and after a SODIS promotion period. The authors attempt to determine the variants between those who stop (relapsers), and those who continue (continuers) the behaviour in terms of psychological factors. Significant findings from the data indicate that problem awareness, beliefs and social influences are distinct to each category, however, it can be concluded that the prevailing factor in characterisation, is the inability to form a behavioural habit.
A relevant concept derived from the article, is the appreciation that simply providing a personal water purification station will not guarantee its use. Successful integration into the community will require an education program to be introduced simultaneously.

Recontamination of clean drinking water is an ongoing issue in developing countries, particularly at the collection and storage stages. By devising a disease risk index (DRI), this paper provides a tool with which highly vulnerable households and/or communities can be identified. The acknowledgement of key factors, that determine the level of contamination, is central to the development of the DRI “ as illustrated in Figure 1. Consequently, these factors became the basis of a score-sheet style assessment of household water quality. The article also considers guidelines to minimise water recontamination, and recommends implementing an intervention strategy using the DRI findings as framework.
Of most relevance to my project idea is one major finding of the article “ that the water storage vessel should also be used as the disinfection vessel. Therefore, eliminating the need for transfer, and risk of recontamination.
